Retail round up: Google To Retire AdWords Name

Google has said that it will retire the AdWords name as part of a larger rebranding activity to simplify and streamline its products and services. Announced last week by Google’s Senior Vice President, Ads and Commerce, Sridhar Ramaswamy, the rebrand also involves a number of other products such as Double Click and Google Analytics 360 Suite.

AdWords, which first made its appearance 18 years ago, will become Google Ads, a new name intended to better reflect the platform’s capabilities. The new brand isn’t expected to change the AdWords experience, rather encompass all of the different ad options and make it easier for advertisers and other organisations such as agencies to select the right product for their needs.

The simplification does come with a new AdWords campaign type, which will bring machine learning into play specifically for small businesses.

As part of the same rebranding and simplification, DoubleClick and Google Analytics 360 Suite will become Google Marketing Platform, while DoubleClick for Publishers and DoubleClick Ad Exchange will be unified as Google Ad Manager.

Tesco and Carrefour confirm alliance

Tesco has announced its intention to form a long term strategic alliance with French retailer, Carrefour. The agreement, which is expected to be signed within the next two months, will see the two largest retailers in their domestic markets join forces to bring bigger buying power and cut prices.

The two retailers say the alliance will allow them to offer more choice to customers as well as cost savings and strengthen supplier relationships. Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said the alliance will help the two grocers to make the most of their collective product expertise and sourcing capability.

Retail industry hardest hit with job losses

New research has found that in the first six months of the year, Britain’s largest businesses have cut 50,000 jobs – with the high street hardest hit. The figures, from the Press Association are backed with BBC figures, which show around 22,000 of those jobs were lost in the retail sector.

Many of those job losses have been as the result of big cost-cutting exercises, voluntary closures and insolvency and there could be more to come – as House of Fraser announced a loss of 6,000 jobs and Poundworld goes into administration with 5,000 jobs in danger.
